Planet Smoothie Franchise Expanding in Atlanta, Seeks Area Developer

The smoothie franchise says Atlanta can support twice as many locations

Nearly 20 years after the Planet Smoothie franchise got its start in Atlanta, we are planning a major expansion. There are 14 Planet Smoothie franchises in metro Atlanta, but demand is strong and sales are up — and we are ready to double our number of stores by partnering with new franchisees throughout the city.

To lead the effort, we are seeking an area developer in Atlanta who would provide training and support to franchisees, and also help open new stores, in exchange for a percentage of franchise and royalty fees.

“We’re looking for a passionate entrepreneur who can focus energy on growing the brand in Atlanta,” CEO Peter Holt says. “Atlanta is full of professionals who need places that offer healthier choices that are convenient and that taste great. The business opportunity is tremendous.”

Until now, the Atlanta market has been managed by our headquarters team, but we are now focusing on growing the brand nationwide.

“Now that we’re poised for nationwide growth, we want to make sure Atlanta still gets the attention it deserves,” Peter says.

Planet Smoothie grew into a major brand in the Southeast thanks to the quality of our smoothies and great word-of-mouth. For the past three years, we’ve been adding systems and developing best practices that have helped improve profits and position Planet Smoothie to grow. Same-store sales have been growing for three years, too.

Why Atlanta is a great market for Planet Smoothie

Planet Smoothie attracts customers who are interested in living healthier lives, who are well-educated, and who are middle- to high-income. The description fits Atlanta residents perfectly.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution recently reported that if Atlanta was a country, it would have the world’s 44th largest economy. Atlanta’s economy generates approximately $306 billion a year, according to IHS Global Insight.

There are many places where a Planet Smoothie franchise can succeed in the Atlanta market. Particularly promising areas include Inman Park, Midtown Mile, Atlantic Station, Buckhead, Briarcliff, Virginia Highland, Tuxedo Park, Johns Creek, Sandy Springs and Alpharetta.

Millions of people are looking for convenient, healthier options in Atlanta and nationwide — and we’ve helped build the demand. Smoothies have grown from a niche market in the 1990s to a $2.4 billion industry, according to research firm Mintel Intelligence Group. “We have had growth every single year, and this year we have seen significant growth every single month,” says Kristin Scott, who opened a store in Suwanee in 2010 with her partner, Karen Hendrix. “Once they try our smoothies, we become the place people want to come.”
