Meet the Planet Smoothie Franchise Owners Taking on Daytona Beach
A great location and a can-do entrepreneurial spirit give these new Planet Smoothie franchise owners a ton of optimism going into opening day
“We think, to be frank, we’re going to kick booty.” And with that, Daedra Hamann sums up how she and husband Glen view their new Planet Smoothie franchise, set to open in early 2017 in Daytona Beach.
The Hamanns’ road to Planet Smoothie is an interesting one, where one path literally did lead to the next. Glen and Daedra both have law-enforcement careers in their background, and Glen is a U.S. Military Veteran as well. When Daedra began pursuing a different career, she found herself on a long commute and often needed to grab a quick meal or snack. She tried and rejected many smoothie shops until she stopped into a Planet Smoothie. That was it.
“I fell in love; I was hooked the minute I tried my first one,” Daedra says. “I saw a number on the cup’s side that said to call about franchise information, and after we thought and prayed about it, we began looking into it.”
Partners at every step in the process
The Hamanns were eager to open their own business, as they both understand the uncertainties around working for a municipality. They began researching the Planet Smoothie franchise opportunity, and the more they read the more they liked. That led to some phone conversations, and an eventual meeting with Area Developer Jason Mann.
“He was gracious enough to sit down and talk with us about the company, and we felt so good after that,” Daedra recalls. “We already liked what we had learned, but that meeting really made us feel at peace. We also learned about the franchise discount for veterans, and that really helped. So then we got busy.”
Over the next few months the Hamann’s began the steps they’d need to move Daedra away from her job and into business operations. That means a front-line role for Daedra, who will operate the Planet Smoothie franchise while Glen continues his work as a Police Lieutenant and also as a U.S. Coast Guard Reservist. Eventually he will join her at what she describes as the “most amazing place anyone could put a Planet Smoothie.”
Location, location — what a location!
The Hamanns’ Planet Smoothie Franchise will be off I-95 and near the Daytona International Speedway. Visitors to the track, which also hosts shows and concerts in addition to NASCAR events, will drive right by them coming and going.
“We didn’t want to be beachside, because then you’re only going to get people going to and from the beach,” Daedra says. “Where we’re going to be, we’re going to have tons of people driving by us every day, and then huge crowds for speedway events. And those people are going to be hot and thirsty, so they’re going to stop and visit us.”
The pair also looks forward to the mentoring opportunity that owning their own business will provide.
“Glen and I strongly believe in leading from the front,” Daedra says. “We have learned so much throughout our careers and want to pass on some of the principles and standards for excellence that have resonated with us. We believe in mentoring, and fully understand that a part-time job at Planet Smoothie is not going to be a forever job — and we don’t want it to be! We want to help employees find out who they are as individuals and what they want to do in their future, then help mold our young people into productive adults who will be an asset to any future employer. Our store will be an amazing place to work where our team will provide excellent service in an environment where the team will learn and grow, all while having fun.”
So far, the Hamanns’ Planet Smoothie franchise journey has been everything they hoped it would be, and Daedra says she can’t say enough about all the help they’ve been given.
“From Jason here to the people at corporate, everyone has been wonderful in helping us learn how to set up the business,” she says. “We’re planning on rocking Daytona Beach, and I can’t wait!”
