Beverly Hills, Rodeo Drive … these are names that bring to mind Hollywood glitz and glamour. They also are bustling neighborhoods and thoroughfares where savvy business owners do a brisk trade, and that’s why recruiting-industry executives Brian Godfrey and Dina Marcelli were eager to open a Planet Smoothie® franchise in the highly visible and famous area.
Here, Godfrey talks about what got them interested in franchising, how they settled on a concept they liked and the remarkable place where they’re going to be doing business starting in spring / summer of 2018.
Once you’d settled on opening a business, what appealed about a Planet Smoothie franchise?
We had a strong interest in providing a product that was part of an active lifestyle, and this business seemed like a good fit for that. Dina did a lot of research, and we went with Planet Smoothie because they had experience with full-store setups as well as walk-up locations like the one we’re going to be operating.
Describe the surroundings at your location.
We’re in Beverly Hills. It’s a counter site at the corner of Charleville Boulevard and South Beverly Drive. It had been a stationery store and was very well known. It’s an iconic location, literally right off Rodeo Drive, and I think it’s going to be something of a hot spot. And the walkup concept, with outdoor seating and a counter, is something different.
As a new franchise owner, how has the onboarding process been?
The discovery-day process and all of that went very smoothly, and nothing was unexpected. We weren’t really sure what the actual training would be like, but the trainers were great and very upbeat. That was helpful to us, because we are new to the business. They kept it fun, informative and very interactive, which was great.
We also knew we would be getting a lot of help with the opening, so knowing the additional training and support was coming eased our minds. We know there will be a lot to learn once we open, so having the professional support for a few days to get us up to optimal efficiency is going to be great. The system is in place to get us through a soft opening, help with more training and then be ready for our grand opening.
Are there other Planet Smoothie locations you’ll be able to rely on
Yes. There’s one in Santa Monica, and others are opening in Redondo Beach and in the San Fernando Valley, so we’re growing the footprint for the brand. It’s very exciting to be a part of that. We’re going to do some of our pre-opening training in Santa Monica, so having them close by is paying a lot of benefits.
Has the process leading up to opening been an easy one?
No project is without its unexpected bumps and turns, but we were ready for most of them. It’s like having a baby. Once you decide to do it, you can get scared. And you never really know if you’re ready, but you just go for it and do everything you can to get ready for it to be here in the world.
